The Oasis - Doom Builder
Learning a new piece of software.
This was my first introduction to map creation using the DoomBuilder tool. It was an interesting experience learning about the technical limitations present at the time, and how the developers worked around them to still produce a functional end product.
I found it quite intuitive to create new areas, and once I got the hang of it I was able to produce this small level. While I may have got sidetracked on the aesthetics and completely ignored any gameplay focused things, I still feel it came out looking alright, especially for my first attempt at using DoomBuilder.
Doom Builder is an advanced 3D map editor for Doom and games based on the Doom engine, such as Heretic, Hexen and Strife.
The lava pit with a less-than-ideal crossing method...
A cave linking the lower and upper sections. The entrance was cut into sections to be individually lit different, to simulate the light bleeding in from outside.
A view of the area outside the lower cave entrance. Use of the skybox makes the area feel less cramped and larger.
An overview of the lake area. An attempt was made to simulate depth using different light levels in the sectors making up the lake.
A demonstration of how the lake is divided to simulate depth. Each section uses a lower light value than the last to make it look deeper.
A similar technique was used to create small hills to fill in larger open areas of grass, giving the area a little more depth and subtle detail. Unlike the water, these areas were also raised a small amount to create some vertical difference.
